CONCERNED PROJECT CATEGORIES OF THAWALAMA DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION

IRRIGATION
Irrigation tanks and canals are restored in the northern, eastern and north central provinces to make irrigation facilities available to the arid but fertile fields in these provinces in order to make them highly productive and thus to alleviate poverty. More...
AGRICULTURE
Agriculture loans are granted to cultivators living in villages affected by the LTTE terrorism to cultivate their fields and to purchase agriculture in puts. These cultivators are also provided with agricultural implements when ever possible and loans are also provided to purchase water pumps. They are also assisted with the construction of agricultural wells when deemed necessary.
RESETTLEMENT AND REHABILITATION
Assistance is given to resettle villagers abandoned as a result of LTTE threats and attacks in the northern, eastern and north central province of Sri Lanka. Families who resettle are provided with dry rations when ever possible to encourage the process of resettlement. Assistance is also provided to built houses, community centres, roads, pre-schools and place of religious worship in these resettled villages.
EDUCATION
Educational scholarships are given to needy children in the villages affected by the LTTE terrorism and pre-school education is encouraged with the payment of salaries to pre-school teachers. Assistance is also given to orphanages providing educational facilities to children from villages affected By LTTE terrorism.
HEALTH AND SANITATION
Medical camps are organized and conducted on a periodical basis in villages affected by LTTE terrorism and assistance is also given to families in these villages to construct water sealed toilets in an effort to alleviate the standard of health and sanitation.
SECURITY

The Armed Forces and Police personnel serving in the front lines are provided with appropriate gifts on a regular basis to improve their morale and fighting spirit to defend the unity and territorial integrity of our motherland. Soldiers disabled in action are provided with artificial limbs etc. on request.
The Thawalama Development Foundation (TDF) was established on 25th of April 1994 to support and assist in the implementation of Project Thawalama approved by the
Ministry of Defense on 14th of January 1994.

The aim of this project was to stem the exodus of the Sinhala population from the strategic Yan Oya basin due to separatist terrorist threats and attacks. Thawalama literally means a caravan that travels from the metropolis to remote villages for the transportation of much needed goods and commodities.

Since the assistance given by the government was inadequate even to meet the basic needs of affected villages in the Yan Oya basin Project Thawalama was initiated to assist these villages. It envisaged improving the economy in affected villages with help organized from affluent areas in the rest of the country.r dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease

Commode Seat Donation Project
Most of our soldiers whose limbs have been amputated hail from remote villages where the toilets they use are either pit latrines or those equipped with squatting pans.

Therefore these soldiers with one or both limbs amputated finds it difficult if not impossible to use such toilets when they go home from their regimental rehabilitation centers.

There is a simple solution to this problem....

Thawalama Development Foundation commence the bicycle repair project in Mullaittivu with donations received from the SPUR Executive Committee.

At the AGM of the North West Sri Lankan Association held yesterday, I was pleased to provide an interim report on the progress made regarding the restoration of the village tank. The members were delighted that the money donated by the Association had been utilized for an extremely worthy cause.
