Sinhala villages in the
Kebithigollewa Divisional
Secretariat Area first came
under LTTE threat during the
Eelam 111 war and these threats
intensified and several villages
were attacked on or about
1990. Villages such as Kelebogahawewa
Konwewa and Veherawewa that
were in the Padaviya Divisional
Secretariat Area were the
northern most villages of
the Anuradhapura district,
which were bordering the Vavuniya
district. |

Mr. Lalith Athulathmudali
was appointed as the Minister
of National Security after
the Tamil riots of 1983. He
was then resident at Polhengoda.
I joined the Minister and
his brother Dayantha for breakfast
at their Plohengoda residence
one day. While at breakfast
the Minister related to me
a very interesting story,
which would prove beyond reasonable
doubt that the Norwegians
were even at that point of
time surreptitiously helping
the LTTE to settle Indian
Tamil families in the strategic
area of Weli Oya, in order
to link the Northern Province
to the Eastern Province with
a continuous land mass inhabited
by Tamils. |

This nation is unique in
that it has a written history
taking us back in time to
over 2500 Years. However,
it is a fact that as a nation
our people have never learned
lessons from history. How
can we do so when our own
political leaders were responsible
for removing history as a
subject from education curricula
of the nation? Even in countries
like America that has a relatively
short history, education in
this subject is compulsory,
because they are well aware
that a nation which does not
know its history cannot make
history and would become extinct.

When we speak of liberation
the question arises as to
who was liberated and from
whom. If it is interpreted
as the liberation of the citizen
living in the eastern part
of our country from a psychopath
who is terrorizing them to
subjugation, then indeed it
is the bounded duty of a government
voted to power by the people
of this country to liberate
people in the east from such

Security Forces and the Police

the call of duty in the performance

services. While they too are
heroes of our nation, who
should be recognized and rewarded,
they are either killed while
performing such services or
are victimized for performing
such services that may be
argued to be beyond the scope
of their responsibility. These
are the unsung heroes whose
actions often go unnoticed
by the general public, because
they receive little or no
publicity. In paying tribute
to all such heroes, let me
focus attention on three of
their kind, to illustrate
their plight. |
